Hartshire Harriers began in 1969 with the acquisition of my first Harrier, Rachel. I was already dog/horse crazy for as long as I can remember and progressing to showing and breeding dogs seemed a natural step.  As I grew up with dachshunds, I wanted to learn about coated breeds and I was fortunate to be able to apprentice under a very knowledgeable and outstanding groomer.  I then went to work for a top show kennel for several years where I learned the art of presenting dogs in the show ring.  Eventually I settled in Ukiah, CA and have made my it home for the last 30 years.

In 1982, I was able to acquire a young puppy named Nuleaf Sarah (affectionately called Sarah Beth).  She quickly earned her AKC Championship and I bred her for the first time to Ch. Pacific's Three Ring Circus which produced 3 champions. Next, she was bred to Ch. Glenbarr Falcon and produced 3 more champions.  Finally, she was bred to Ch. Kishniga's Bret Maverick and that litter produced 6 champions.  Although we did not realize it at the time, these three breedings became the foundation for most of the American Harrier lines.  Other than English imports, everyone of my Harriers comes down from Sarah Beth. Along with producing excellent breed type, I'm most proud of the health that Sarah Beth passed on as well.  Sara Beth was the 2nd Harrier ever to have her hips certified by OFA and I have continued to xray all of my Harriers since then with consistently great results.  I have also screened eyes for genetic disease from the very beginning.  Producing healthy dogs has always been a top priority for my breeding program.

Over the years, I have owned and loved many Harriers, many of whom you will see on these pages.  Although I have never seriously campaigned a Harrier in the show ring, many of my dogs (either bred and owned by me or bred by me) have earned  Best of Breed placements from the classes, group placements and even a few Best in Shows.  Over 30 Hartshire Harriers have earned their AKC Championships.

My goals in breeding Harriers are to continue to breed healthy, intelligent, beautiful hounds that make wonderful companions whether they be show dogs, hunting hounds, or family pets.  All of my dogs are tested for hip and eye health and only the best examples of the breed are included in future generations.  Companion puppies are sold on spay/neuter contracts and owners are required to do health clearances on their puppies at the age of two.  Having information on entire litters helps me to make the best decisions for future litters and ensure Hartshire Harriers remain healthy and sound.

If you are interested in a puppy, please check my Upcoming Litters page for planned breedings. Show, companion, hunting and performance hounds are available to the right homes.
